The First Round of IIT and bitgrit’s Data Science Contest Wraps Up

The first round of Inter IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Tech Meet 2019’s Data Science Competition recently came to a close on December 8. A respectable 19 of the total 65 participating teams moved on to Round 2.

Background

IITs are an esteemed group of technical institutions spanning across India, and their nexus acts as fertile ground for innovation across multiple disciplines. Every year, thousands of students from all 23 IITs work towards solving the world’s most pressing problems through technology at the annual Inter IIT Tech Meet. This year, bitgrit is organizing the bitgrit Data Science Contest. They have the aim of congregating the best data scientists in India at the collegiate level.

This contest will consist of two online rounds and culminate in an offline conference at IIT Roorkee from December 20 to 22. The first round was held on bitgrit’s AI competition platform. The challenge was to find an algorithm that would help stabilize risk in foreign exchange. The successful submissions for this competition will be utilized in an exchange position transaction and management system. This challenge also serves as a chance for students to get experience using three datasets covering a period of 10 years with real media, news, and exchange data.

Rundown

This initial round started on December 2 and saw 19 IITs participate, with a total of 220 participants split into 65 teams. Between all the members, they submitted a stunning 16,751 solutions in total. Each team is also in the running alongside bitgrit’s other competitors the $10,000 USD prize. The winning team was IIT Kharagpur’s Rangers, and continuing along to the next round are top teams from each of the 19 participating IITs.
